I’ve always thought the suggestion “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” to be a farce. At worst, it was just something conjured up by cereal companies to sell their product. Breakfast has always been a light meal for me so, when I decided to eliminate it altogether, it wasn’t very difficult.
After all, we’re just animals and, besides our domesticated pets, what animal eats meals at regular times daily? Animals eat when they can or when they’re hungry. Why do we think our bodies need to be nourished on a fixed schedule? Time is actually one of the biggest benefits to intermittent fasting.
You save time
One of the unexpected benefits of intermittent fasting was the amount of time I saved. Not only did I gain the time I would normally spend eating, but I gained the time I would spend prepping, and cleaning the dishes, as well as shopping for one less meal.
You save money
That brings to mind my second point, because you’re not eating breakfast, you’re not buying breakfast. It’s a great diet in that you don’t have to spend money on any specialized foods, because you’re just eating fewer foods. Without breakfast, I’ve also eliminated the need for appliances like a toaster or a blender, which are a big deal since I have to carry my kitchen.
You eat less
Not only do I eat less by cutting out one meal a day, I find I am less hungry. There is the rough patch around 9 or 10 every morning that I give into occasionally, but by the time the window opens on my eating around 12pm, my appetite seems to have abated. Who knows, maybe I’ll eventually make it to one meal a day!
I’ve been traveling in Mexico the last month which makes the diet easy because even if you head out for breakfast around noon, most places serve breakfast until 1pm. Even if a traditional breakfast isn’t your thing at noon, Mexican menus offer savory choices like enchiladas on their breakfast menu.
It sure beats the days of having to worry about getting downstairs before the buffet closes at my hotel!
